The focus of the spring term remains the Alegrias de Cádiz palo. The spring and last term of the year is focused on refining technique and adding the remained of the choreography we have been working on since the fall. We will also work on interpretation skills and performance skills. By the end of the spring term, participants, will have a complete "Baile por Alegrias". A traditional "Baile por Alegrias" (alegrias dance) is traditionally comprised of three sections:

  1. the "Cante Por Alegrias" song, covered in the fall, in this case: "The Voy a A querer Siempre" by Canelita
  1. the "Escobilla" - an extended footwork-only section, (in our case, about 2.5 minutes long)
  1. concluding with " Bulerias de Cadiz", a lively ending (about 1.5 minute long)

We will add the bulerias and we will review and work on improving skills and speed of the footwork and possibly add the silencio and the castellana, which are slow short segments typically between the Alegrias song and the escobilla.

The school will be having their annual student showcase on Saturday June 22 at 7.30pm at the Northwood Community Centre in Halifax's North-end and student of all levels are invited and welcome to participate, however this is not mandatory.

About Our Hybrid Classes 💻

Our Hybrid class format brings together in-person and online students in a dynamic hybrid experience. Here's what you can expect:

  • Our hybrid classes run through Zoom video conferencing software. Along with your registration, you'll receive a private link to join the classes.
  • All classes are recorded on Zoom and sent to all students.
  • All Students will have access to a collection of videos of all classes throughout the duration of the course and for a year afterwards.
  • To enhance the online learning experience and since teachers cannot hear the footwork from online students, online students are encouraged to send videos of their progress periodically for personalized feedback.
  • In-person students have the option to attend from home when needed, all students will get the online access.

For Online Students: An Immersive Experience

Online students are an integral part of our class community, with the same opportunities for participation as in-person students. Online students can ask questions or seek feedback and also choose to have your camera off if prefered. Additionally, for a more personalized touch, online students are encouraged to send us a video of their progress once a month for a one-on-one session. Below and example of a previous course offered last yer for this class in the format, the view is what online students see.

Is This Course for You?

This course is tailored for students who have been pursuing flamenco dance for at least 3 years, typically attending classes once a week and builds upon already learned material.

This spring term will contain mostly already learned choreography in the fall and winter terms. Depending on your level, it might be a challenging time to join and best to wait to the fall term, however if you are familiar with alegrias, and have been dancing for 3 years or more, you should be able to pick up the choreography and catch up. Should you wish to join we have videos available at an additional fee for you to review the material learned before you joined, as well as entire recorded classes you can take outside the scheduled classes. There is an extra fee to access these.

For student with a higher level, this class is an excellent opportunity to refine your technique and interpretation and to learn a full choreography por alegrias that is mostly already done.

Karen was a great teacher! She broke things down in a calm and logical way. She presented new material as if it wasn’t a big deal and she gave very useful and practical suggestions/corrections.

Taking the class via web conferencing has been fun, effective and diversifies my fitness/creative pursuits. I would not otherwise have the ability to access flamenco instruction in my city and continue my regular exposure to this wonderful art form.
